The Right Way and the Wrong Way to Praise Your Kids

Praise Your Kids

Before you do, though, take a beat to consider your words. The right phrasing might keep your little artist happy and hardworking, but researchers say praising children the wrong way can make them less motivated, harm their self-esteem, or even turn them into tiny narcissists.

Praise Your Kids

“In general, in the U.S. particularly, we tend to view all praise as good,” says Shannon Zentall, a developmental psychologist at the University of Akron. But focusing on a child’s innate qualities — saying “You’re so smart” or “You’re great at math,” for example — can actually be harmful, possibly because it suggests that these qualities are fundamental to the child’s identity. Kids who hear this kind of “person praise” may be less persistent after a failure or avoid difficult tasks in favor of easier ones, perhaps because a failure would threaten that identity.

They may also be more keenly attuned to potential mistakes. In a 2012 study, Zentall and her co-author, Bradley Morris, used eye-tracking technology to show that young kids who had heard person praise (“You’re a good drawer”) focused more on the errors in a drawing. This ties in with mindset theory, an idea developed by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck that suggests that a fixed mindset — the belief that abilities are innate and unchangeable — undermines personal progress.

By contrast, process praise focuses on what the kid did: “You must have studied hard for that math test,” or simply, “Good job!” Some research co-authored by Dweck has shown that after kids hear this kind of feedback, they’re more motivated on future tasks and more resilient to setbacks.

According to mindset theory, process praise can also help kids cultivate the opposite of the fixed mindset: a growth mindset, or the belief that their abilities are malleable and can be improved with time and effort. In one study, Dweck and her colleagues videotaped parents interacting with their toddlers and gave questionnaires to the same kids years later. Those who had heard more process praise as toddlers had more growth-oriented mindsets in second or third grade. In the fourth grade, the same kids performed better in math and reading comprehension.

Kennedy Club Movie Review: Bharathiraja And M Sasikumar Feature In A Dull Sports Drama From Suseenthiran

Kennedy Club

Kennedy Club, which is about an underdog team of female kabaddi players, is yet another disappointment from Suseenthiran. (The title is the name of the team.) Oh, if you want to set the bar really low, you can find things to like. You could say: Okay, I didn’t mind the guy who’s the comic relief, unable to consummate his marriage because his wife takes off to New Delhi to play a tournament.

Kennedy Club

You could say: It’s nice to see a sport being shown as a way out of poverty for the daughters of daily-wage labourers. You could say: Phew, the film is just 120 minutes. But really, the one thing you keep saying is this: Is Suseenthiran a major filmmaker or not? Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu and Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer suggest that he is one of our best, but… the rest?

The worst aspect is probably the villain of the piece, the coach-turned-official played by Murli Sharma. How do we know he’s crooked? Because he gets a call, in the middle of a match, asking him to ensure his team loses, and he asks the man at the other end of the line: “I’ll get that posting, right?” And much later, when he tempts the Sasikumar character with a bribe, we are meant to think the latter has sold out. Suseenthiran must think we have never seen a Tamil movie.

Soori makes a guest appearance as a “parotta” fan who’s mistaken for the “Baroda” coach. I’ll spare you the details. A cheerfully hammy Bharathiraja gets to bark angry things like “Shaddup!” and he brings down a regime of corruption with one casual chat with a minister. These are just plot points, a basic template. They still need to be fleshed out into scenes, into a screenplay. But who’s going to take the effort as long as we keep patting films on the back for the “messages” they carry. We’ve transformed movies into mailmen.

As part of a nationwide program that has already found homes for more than a quarter million pets, the Jacksonville Humane Society and Animal Care and Protective Services is offering free adoptions this weekend.

The annual Clear the Shelters movement and PetSmart Charities provided more than 150 dog and cat adoptions Saturday to open up space in area animal shelters that are once again at capacity despite Jacksonville’s mega-adoption event last month.

In Lee County, Alabama, some of the animals have been living in the shelter for months, unable to find a family, said Bailey Ray, the foster care coordinator for the Lee County Humane Society.

We have a capacity for 115 animals in a shelter,” Ray said. “We have way more than 115. So with this being our busy season, we’re really hoping that this is going to be a chance, with those reduced adoption fees, that people are drawn to add a new best friend to their family.”

JHS and ACPS will be at the PetSmart store on Monument Road with more than 200 pets on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both shelter locations will be open with the same free adoption special, though additional fees may apply for all adoptions.

Nashville sounds affiliate: A baseball fan who signed a contract with the Oakland A’s organization after a viral video showed him throwing a 96-mph pitch struck out all three batters he faced in his professional debut.

Right-handed pitcher Nathan Patterson, 23, took to the mound as a pro for the first time last week as the AZL Athletics Gold, a minor league affiliate of the A’s, faced the AZL Cubs 2. According to MiLB, the official site of Minor League Baseball, Patterson threw nine strikes in nine pitches, though he said he actually threw 18 times to strike out the three batters.

Patterson told MLB.com that he hadn’t thrown “for a few years” before last August, and noted of his high school playing days, “I didn’t really have a good arm then.”

“This story is not over. It is not the beginning,” Patterson wrote in an Instagram post. “I am writing the next chapters and excited for this journey! Time to focus even more, work even harder, and it all starts with your mindset. Go after your dreams and make them a reality!”

San Antonio call on Credit Union to maintain 100 Jobs

A man awaiting trial after being charged with counterfeiting was arrested again Thursday after Helotes police accused him of cashing a $10,000 check that did not belong to him. Jon Rivera, 40, was charged with forgery of a check, Bexar County Jail records showed.

In February, a Helotes resident called police to report a stolen check. The resident’s family member was expecting a $10,000 check from USAA in the mail, but the check was never received, according to the arrest affidavit. The resident told police that the check had been cashed, however, into a Navy Federal Credit Union bank account.

PenFed employees were told the credit union would soon consolidate its branches, meaning some would need to relocate to San Antonio – or potentially lose their jobs.

The Commerce Department said Friday that new homes sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 635,000 units. That’s down from a sharply revised upward rate of 728,000 in June. So far this year, sales have risen 4.1%, a sign that buyers are beginning to respond to lower mortgage rates.

“People that can’t go, which is the majority, are going to be out of a job in a couple weeks or months,” San Antonio said.

Stephen Fry has lost five-and-a-half stone since April following his battle with prostate cancer, but says that he is “very happy”. Last year, the actor had his prostate removed after his diagnosis with the condition and urged “men of a certain age” to get tested for the disease. The actor is now cancer-free.

Divulging his slimming down secrets, the 61-year-old explained: “I walk a lot and that helps my mood as well, I find. It’s not a guaranteed help for mental stress and anxiety or anything else but it does help me.

He added: “I walk a lot and that helps my mood as well I find, it’s not a guaranteed help for mental stress and anxiety or anything else but it does help me and it means I can listen to audio books as I walk, and podcasts, and you eat up the miles that way, and talking of eating up, eating sensibly.”

Speaking of his mental health, Fry said that he has found that walking improves his overall mood.

Apple iOS update ends in jailbroken: Reopens Security Flaw

Jailbreaking is where you exploit a security hole, or more likely a whole series of security holes, in what is essentially a carefully orchestrated cybersecurity attack on yourself, in order to liberate yourself from Apple’s locked-down attitude to iPhones.

ios

Want to install your own apps? Want to modify locked system settings? Want to run network services like SSH or even a tiny web server? Want the freedom to delve more deeply into a running system than Apple will let you? Want to patch security holes on old and unsupported devices?

In iOS 12.4, released last month, Apple fixed a number of security bugs, as well as enabling support for the Apple Card in the US. But in doing so, the company accidentally reversed a security fix it had previously patched in iOS 12.3 at the end of April.

People using iOS 12.4 or iOS 12.2 and below should be careful with what they download from the App Store in coming weeks because an app could include the jailbreak, according to security researcher Stefan Esser.

How to Reduce Blood Pressure Quickly?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney disease. With around 15–20% of our blood going to the brain, the National Institute of Aging part of the National Institutes of Health, explain that “the blood flow that keeps the brain healthy can, if reduced or blocked, harm this essential organ.”

The study, published in Diabetes and Metabolism, examined 159 healthy volunteers split into two groups. Both groups maintained their regular diet, with one key difference: One group purchased their foods from local growers who did not use additives in processing, while others purchased items found at traditional grocery stores. Both groups followed essentially a Mediterranean diet, which many researchers regard as one of the healthiest diets.

In a 2013 study, people with hypertension were found to have a significant reduction in blood pressure after consuming five ounces (150ml) of pomegranate juice daily for two weeks.

This news comes at a difficult crossroads period in the US. In 2018, the Trump administration eased school lunch rules to include fewer whole grains and vegetables and more sugar, salt and other additives. Critics of the previous Obama plan to serve more nutritious foods argued children waste healthy foods because they don’t like to eat them.
Kombucha is a fermented food meaning its rich in probiotics, which is a beneficial bacteria that plays an important role in maintaining gut health.

Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have come together to bring cross-brand file transfer system

0

Popular Chinese brands Xiaomi, Vivo, and OPPO today announced a new cross-brand file transmission alliance, which aims to deliver a better file transfer experience to users.

The protocol will use Bluetooth to pair devices and should be capable of transfer speeds of up to 20MB/s, which suggests it uses Wi-Fi on the backend, like Apple’s proprietary AirDrop system. Xiaomi’s post says other smartphone manufacturers can apply to join the presently allied trio. A beta version of the service should be released by the end of this month.

Today, leading Chinese Android OEMs including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have announced plans to create a new standard for P2P file transfer protocol for Android devices. Unlike Google’s Fast Share, this new protocol will use Bluetooth and support up to 20 Mbps. Once implemented, users of Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo devices can transfer files and folders among them with a simple tap.

In 2011, Google tried bringing AirDrop-like file transfers to Android with the Android Beam feature, which used NFC to pair devices. The feature will finally be replaced with ‘Fast Share’ in Android Q. ‘Fast Share’ will allow Android users to share images, URLs, text snippets, and more with nearby devices without internet.
